A Day in Munich

Munich was the first destination of our Christmas getaway! We stayed in the Novotel Muenchen Messe which was about a 20 minute U Bahn (underground train) from the city centre. We only had one day in München before setting off for Vienna so we tried to do as many of the major sites as possible!

English Garten :
This park is beautiful and we got absolutely glorious weather for it! The sun was shining and the lake was frozen. You definitely need your winter layers on at this time of year but it is such a lovely place to stroll around so pretty and relaxing. It reminded me of Central Park in New York as it also has a boat house restaurant overlooking the lake. It is definitely worth a trip to!

Marianplatz is Munich’s central square full of beautiful buildings and plenty of shops! There was a very cute Christmas market on when we were there which was lovely to walk around. Prices are very expensive so not the best city to visit on a budget holiday but overall very pretty and leisurely.

Beer hall:
When in Munich it is criminal not to go to a beer hall and get the litre glass of beer especially with the city being home of Oktoberfest. Firstly we went into the Hofbräuhaus München which is a beer hall in the city centre. It was absolutely packed when we were there and they had a live band playing. The atmosphere was great but it was impossible to get a table and seemed rather messy so we left and decided to go to the Augustiner-Keller beer hall which was much nicer, still with plenty of atmosphere and very reasonable, only €7.80 for the litre of beer and they give you a free pretzel too! 🙂

Transport: the transport system in Munich is super easy to navigate it’s quite similar to the tube in London. There’s the S Bahn which are the over ground trains and the U Bahn which is the underground. For an adult day ticket it cost about €6 however there are no turnstiles which you have to go through to scan a ticket therefore buying a ticket is easily avoidable! (Ssshhhh…)

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to do everything we wanted but the BMW museum was also on our list as well as the Alliance Stadium! But definitely the main sites of Munich are very doable in a day!
